چکیده

An enigmatic prediction of Einstein’s general theory of relativity are gravitational waves. With the observed decay in the orbit of the Hulse-Taylor binary pulsar agreeing within a fraction of a percent with the theoretically computed decay from Einstein’s theory the existence of gravitational waves was firmly established. Currently there is a worldwide effort to detect gravitational waves with inteferometric gravitational wave observatories or detectors and several such detectors have been built or being built. The initial detectors have reached their design sensitivities and now the effort is on to construct advanced detectors which are expected to detect gravitational waves from astrophysical sources. The era of Gravitational Wave Astronomy has arrived. This article describes the worldwide effort which includes the effort on the Indian front the IndIGO project -, the principle underlying interferometric detectors both on ground and in space, the principal noise sources that plague such detectors, the astrophysical sources of gravitational waves that one expects to detect by these detectors and some glimpse of the data analysis methods involved in extracting the very weak gravitational wave signals from detector noise.

A Decision between Bayesian and Frequentist Upper Limit in Analyzing Continuous Gravitational Waves

Given the sensitivity of current ground-based Gravitational Wave (GW) detectors, any continuous-wave signal we can realistically expect will be at a level or below the background noise. Hence, any data analysis of detector data will need to rely on statistical techniques to separate the signal from the noise. While with the current sensitivity of our detectors we do not expect to detect any tru...

Gravitational Radiation *

Gravity is one of the fundamental forces of Nature, and it is the dominant force in most astronomical systems. In common with all other phenomena, gravity must obey the principles of Special Relativity. In particular, gravitational forces must not be transmitted or communicated faster than light. This means that when the gravitational field of an object changes, the changes ripple outwards thro...

Estimates of maximum energy density of cosmological gravitational-wave backgrounds

The recent claim by BICEP2 of evidence for primordial gravitational waves has focused interest on the potential for early-Universe cosmology using gravitational waves. In addition to cosmic microwave background detectors, efforts are underway to carry out gravitational-wave astronomy with pulsar timing arrays, space-based detectors, and terrestrial detectors. These efforts will probe a wide ran...

Possible direct method to determine the radius of a star from the spectrum of gravitational wave signals

We computed the spectrum of gravitational waves from a dust disk star of radius R inspiraling into a Kerr black hole of mass M and specific angular momentum a. We found that when R is much larger than the wave length of the quasinormal mode, the spectrum has several peaks and the separation of peaks Deltaomega is proportional to R-1 irrespective of M and a. This suggests that the radius of the ...
